The stunning landmark was built in 1792 as the first lighthouse in New York State, and was finally recognized for its historical significance on March 5 of 2012.

Its status as the state’s first lighthouse as well as its prime location at the very end of Long Island has allowed for its popularity to spike throughout the state and the nation at large. It has become a tourist spot for those around the world seeking to soak in both its history and the Island’s wonderful views.

The Lighthouse Grounds Museum and Gift Shop is a notable highlight of the lighthouse’s modern years. While modest in size, history buffs of all ages can absorb the museum as presented through various galleries and notable whaling industry artifacts.

The lighthouse’s museum is privately run and has plenty of special programs. As stated by their website, they have hosted many wedding receptions and other private events. The views from both atop the lighthouse as well as on the cliffside have been a large part of its popularity. Alongside its views, the facilities are inclined towards education. Group or school tours of 20 or more can be booked in advance at different rates than standard admission.

Admission to the lighthouse costs $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, and for children under 12, $5. Small children 41” or shorter have free admission. The Lighthouse Grounds Museum and Gift Shop are open seven days a week, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through May 23. They close in bad weather, so check their Facebook for updates.
